"Celebrity"
A Modern Grim Fairytale
ACT 1
It is 4am and high school dropout Amy is having a nightmare about her future. After taunts from various friends, family and critics, the Devil finally appears offering her a pact: all her dreams of fame and fortune can be made real in return for one thing...her soul.
The next morning, while working her shift at the supermarket, Amy’s boyfriend Tim arrives only to break up with her. To compound her misery, Stan, a geek from school whom she has no interest in, immediately seizes the opportunity to declare his love for her.
Amy is then called away to news of her Dad who has just been rushed to hospital. He is recovering from a heart attack but reassures Amy he’ll be fine and jokes that they are about to win the lottery. They turn on the TV to watch the results and watch incredulous as all 6 of his numbers come up. As they celebrate the excitement is too much and he suffers a fatal stroke. A forlorn Amy is then whisked away on the crest of a media wave by reporters who label her, “The Girl who won the day her Dad died!”
Amy’s Uncle Max, a greedy publicist, now adopts her as his new client and assembles a team to transform her into a Celebrity “It Girl”. Tim returns now wishing to reverse their earlier breakup and tracks Amy down to a glamorous nightclub where she is partying.
In the club, Max tells Tim that the only way he’ll gain access to Amy is by first performing a sex act on him. Tim refuses and watches as Amy and her girlfriends leave the club drunk and disorderly. Outside, Amy is abandoned by her new “friends” to an abusive horde of paparazzi who chase her down and print the headline, “Amy’s Fall!”
Max now suggests a big Celebrity wedding to try and save Amy’s career. Instead of Tim however, he produces Stan from the wings predicting that his new acting star and Amy will make the perfect Celebrity couple.
After a massive media circus with Max selling the rights for the wedding to various tabloids and magazines, the big day arrives and captures the public imagination. Tim tries desperately to stop the wedding but is ultimately unsuccessful while the Devil appears as registrar.
ACT 2
Amy has a blonde makeover and rising actor Stan is renamed Hugh Charming. Together the press dub them the latest Celebrity couple, “Goldilocks and Prince Charming”. But Amy is soon bored of the marriage and leaves Stan to go off in search of fun. She makes her way through a wild wood to a glitzy Casino owned by the Devil called the “House of the 3 Celebrity Dares.” Here she is dared by Max to gamble excessively, sleep with a trio of gigolos and finally snort large amounts of cocaine. Max then calls the police to frame her for drug dealing.
After several days trial which takes place in the public eye, she is found guilty and sent to jail. Miserable and alone, she is eventually visited by Tim who reminds her of the good times they shared before she was famous. Amy wonders if she will ever get her old life back again. Will she leave fame and fortune and return to her first true love?
Some time later the curtain rises on the live stream of a reality TV programme called “The Big Mamma Show”. Amy, Max and Hugh have been signed up as housemates causing friction as the show progresses. Amy rapidly descends into madness when events conspire against her becoming like a re-enactment of her punishing trial.
Now languishing in mental hospital, Amy has a vision of happy childhood memories. In this surreal dream she dances ballroom with her favourite teddy bear, but the nostalgic wonderland soon turns to nightmare and the bear is executed by faceless ninjas. The Devil returns ordering her to give up and die as there is no way out. Amy’s critics return blaming her again for not working harder. Finally, a group of fairies enter bringing with them a new teddy bear. Amy curls up with it on the floor as the walls close in and the lights fade.
